Cognitive Processing Therapy
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is an evidence-based, cognitive-behavioural treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Proven effective through decades of rigorous scientific research, CPT is recommended as a first-line treatment for PTSD and is effective for trauma survivors across a wide range of experiences, including military combat, sexual assault, abuse, accidents, and other traumatic events.
CPT works by helping individuals identify and challenge unhelpful thoughts and beliefs that developed as a result of their trauma, patterns of thinking that can keep a person feeling “stuck” in their symptoms. By examining the connections between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, clients are supported in building a new understanding of their traumatic experience, reducing its impact on daily life. CPT is typically delivered over 12 sessions in either individual or group format and does not necessarily require recounting the details of the traumatic event, making it an accessible and flexible option for many clients.
