Narrative Therapy

Narrative Therapy is an evidence-informed approach that recognizes that people make meaning of their lives through the stories they tell about themselves, their relationships, and their experiences. Sometimes, challenges such as trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, or chronic stress can become the dominant story, leading individuals to see themselves through the lens of the problem.

A central principle of Narrative Therapy is that the person is not the problem; the problem is the problem. Through a process called externalization, individuals are supported in viewing challenges as separate from their identity rather than as defining characteristics of who they are. This shift can reduce shame, self-blame, and feelings of helplessness while creating space for new perspectives and possibilities.

As individuals explore how the problem affects their lives, they are also encouraged to identify their strengths, values, skills, and moments of resilience that may have been overlooked. Together, therapist and client work to develop a richer, more empowering narrative that reflects the individual’s preferred identity and lived experience.

Narrative Therapy can be effective in addressing trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, grief, relationship challenges, and Occupational Stress Injuries (OSI). By helping individuals re-author their relationship with life’s challenges, Narrative Therapy fosters hope, empowerment, and a greater sense of agency in the healing process.
